Merriam-Webster defines “ally” as “one that is associated with another as a helper; a person or group that provides assistance and support in an ongoing effort, activity or struggle.” In recent years, the term has been used to describe a person supporting a marginalized group.
This training helps those interested in becoming an ally to understand and leverage their privilege or power on behalf of those who desire representation. We will explore the concept of allyship, what it is, and what it is not.
Topics will include:
- what defines allyship;
- what proactive steps can be taken to be acknowledged as an ally by an underrepresented group;
- what examples of systemic racism survive in society today despite the best of efforts; and,
- how privilege can be leveraged to benefit and support those who lack power and representation.
Our discussion will explore personal examples of allyship, coupled with the pros and cons associated with being an ally. Our time will include a reflection period for personal growth and development.
Participants will learn about the different types of privilege as well as how to leverage their personal privilege as an ally to support those who are under-represented and/or marginalized.
