Hoarding disorder is a recognized mental health disorder characterized by persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions, regardless of the value others may attribute to these possessions. The accumulation of a large number of possessions often clutters active living areas to the extent that their intended use is no longer possible.

Left unchecked, hoarding may result in safety issues that affect not just the individual but others. Failure to address hoarding in an effective and coordinated manner often results in high-cost crisis interventions that do not address the root causes of the problem, resulting in failure to prevent evictions and reduce risks.

This six-hour training will take place over two mornings. There are three primary sections.

The first section will focus on understanding hoarding disorder. Participants will gain a better understanding of hoarding as a mental health issue. Additionally, they will learn how to identify hoarding disorder and differentiate it from other issues with clutter.

In the second section, participants will learn how to use empathy and empowerment within their roles to help engage the individual and other team members in a compassionate and effective resolution process.

Finally, participants will learn to use and implement objective tools, skills, and strategies to develop effective multidisciplinary collaborative plans to resolve hoarding cases. This section includes a case study and discussion on professional roles in hoarding cases. We will consider our challenges, abilities, and limitations, and discern how to best utilize our roles to complement the process.

This workshop will not be recorded.
